Next adventure: writer in residence in Seoul
Seoul Art Space Yeonhui where I will be writer in residence September 2018
I am excited and honoured to have been chosen as one of the writers in residence at Yeonhui Art Space in Seoul for the month of September. Everything about this residency gives me such a buzz.
- The programme is part of the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture, a well organised government body
- The buildings look charming and so does the setting
- The thought of a whole month in which writing comes first thrills me top to toe
- Everyone says the people of Korea are super friendly
- I’m sure to be involved in some literary events
- It’s in Seoul! My first visit to a legendary city! In autumn!
- I will have time to explore the city including the famous flea markets and temples and daytime discos for old people.
Enough bullet points already! I know there will be problems, starting with my ignorance of the language, and my arrival late at night. But hey.
My mother Celia was keen on adventures for everyone: she died many years ago, but I can sense her gleefully egging me on, and it gives me extra pleasure to imagine her coming along for the ride.

Congratulations ! You will have a wonderful time ! I spent six months there some years ago, and many Koreans speak English in the big cities. I was in a small city, but at our local supermarket / department store / shopping arcade those with little English would fetch the staff member with English. So your lack of Korean will not be too problematical.

Yes I did. Six months teaching English in a kindergarten / cram school.

I have been there back in the 70’s and enjoyed it very much, the people are very friendly and helpful, but I found that if in that part of the world most are.

so many others have voiced my thoughts…and I guess this will mean “you will construct that book” – whether it’s the one you are “thinking about now” or something that comes once you are residing somewhere else… apparently that happens on a residency – you assume you will do xyz and you end up back at abc, all good though
No problem, I always write in such situations. As Apirana Taylor once said, I set out to write a short story about Napoleon and it turned into a poem about a seagull.
