Meditation: the method is the medium

meditation-method-Rachel-McAlpine

Just sit for ten minutes and the body will settle down and meditate. Terrible drawing, ay?

You blame your mind
for failing to be mindful.
You want, you try
you know you ought
to meditate

and when your mind
refuses to be still
you blame your will.
Your mind is jumping
while your body sits

hands free
limbs loose
torso noble like a hill
at peace
in every cell.

Your body meditates until
your unnecessary mind
unwinds.
It’s not an esoteric skill.
It’s a formula, a drill.

A quiet body cools
a noisy mind.
A contented body
soothes
a worried mind.

About the drawings. You may wonder, who does those freaky drawings? Me. I have only one rule: I must publish my first attempt. If I worried about drawing well, I could make 100 drawings and still like the first one best.

I think the drawings are terrific. A few years ago, I took a meditation class, once a week, and it was the best 1hour of my week. Your posting is a good reminder to get back to meditation. Ooooommm!

Thanks! My attitude to the drawings is aligned to mindfulness (I like to think): they are what they are. Happy to know you are getting back to the practice.

      1. srbottch says:

Well, as I noted, I should try to get back…😉

        Start with 30 seconds a day 🙂

      All my own.

You’ve made it so that I can easily remember how and why to meditate. Now all I have to do is try. Nice poem! My favorite stanza begins, “Your body meditates until . . . “

      Me happy then.

Love the drawing – very descriptive. I’m a long-time, now lapsed, meditator. My mindfulness comes in snatches during the day when (and IF) I remember ….. lapsed irretrievably I fear me.

I need habits and triggers, the more the merrier. If not every morning first thing, it would never happen.

The drawing conveys the message loud and clear.

    1. Rachel McAlpine says:

So it does the trick. Good!

  7. Have totally loved starting a meditation practise and have greatly benefitted from it.

      That’s great news.

I am this way about photos, too; so often the first one is the best; not the perfect best, but the good best, if you know what I mean.

    1. Rachel McAlpine says:

The good best. I like that.

  9. I love your drawing AND your poem. I try and “make” myself meditate every day. I fight it, because of course I’m too busy. But then when I give myself the 10 – or 20 minutes, I’m in nirvana.

    1. Rachel McAlpine says:

That’s how it goes! One day you’ll just do it without that tussle…

  10. tingsha says:

This is great! And I think its very freeing to share your drawings without worrying about how they look (much better energy!)
    Thank you!

That’s a lovely comment, thank you.
