Give your brain some fun: tiny tip for well-being in old age

Percussionist Andreas Lepper teaching older people to drum

Learning a new skill: drumming

Erica Appelros gives us a fine tip for improving our chances of well-being in old age. It concerns that important organ, the brain.

Q. Imagine a younger person telling you they want to achieve a happy, healthy old age. Give your very best tip, in 30 words or fewer.
A. Never stop being playful and curious, learning new skills and venturing into new areas of expertise!

Q. Why did you choose to share that particular tip?
A. By trying out and learning new things our brain creates new neural networks and even grows new brain cells, which counteracts the ageing process. Besides, it is fun!

Q. Did you follow any advice that you were given about achieving a happy, healthy old age?
A. Yes

Q. How old are you?
A. 55–64

  3. Good advice. Part of the reason I’ve taken up Curling for a winter sport /hobby.

Not just new skills but returning to an earlier skill – refreshing that skill, and once you’ve rethought the basics, see how you can revamp for current “today” – it may have been a skill, you didn’t quite get at the time, maybe with more experience under your belt, it will come to fruition…

Good point. Pushing it a different way.

I find it much easier to be goofy than when I was young and worried about what people would think.

Go for it! It’s now or never

      1. Elizabeth says:

In my case it is definitely now.

Such a good tip. I decided to learn to play the violin at 57. Crazy and my brain hurt (must have been those new neural pathways growing) but it’s been fun.

    1. Rachel McAlpine says:

By any measure, that was a great decision.
