New Zealand free of Covid-19 for now

Magic moment: New Zealand free of Covid-19—for now

We are savouring this moment. New Zealand is free of Covid-19, at least for now.

Those coloured things in my Bad Drawing—are they lollies, marbles, or bubbles (as I intended)? I do not know, and I drew them. I hope they look cheerful to you.

We were lucky. Among other blessings while Covid-19 was active in New Zealand we had and still have:

  • a government that believes in science
  • a smart, empathetic leader with a background in communications
  • a small remote country surrounded by sea
  • a nation where some sense of community persists.

On the other hand, even if we stay free of Covid-19 here we face enormous post-pandemic problems. We are not exempt from those problems. A deep global recession heads the list and is followed by a long and terrifying catalogue.

We’ll stick it out. We’ll still be us. And we’ll continue to be kind.
