38. Christmas here, now and everywhere

Christmas is here now — and almost everywhere around the world. But how have your own celebrations changed over the years? How has your role changed and has your attitude towards Christmas changed? Are you more religious or spiritual now than you were 20 years ago? Why has this particular religious festival gone viral? Why do various non-Christian nations celebrate Christmas with a public holiday? How does Christmas vary in different countries?
Above all, what does Christmas here and now mean to you? I asked random people this question on Cuba Street, Wellington, and they were mostly in agreement — but with some surprises. And of course I have my own opinions.

I missed this post in December and somehow listened to it this week. Probably on YouTube. I loved so much your going out to the street to talk to the community. And record it! How brave you are! It has me thinking about talking to others and perhaps including it in my blog.
For me, the center of Christmas is Jesus birth as our savior. I love how He is the son of God and called a few places in the Bible ‘Emmanuel’ meaning God with us. That means everything to me. That said, the holiday does heavily mean food and a little lighter emphasis on gifts, not Santa, we never did Santa in our family, but gifts to one another. I love cooking so that part of the holiday appeals to me very much. It is how I show love.
My family is much smaller now, but I figure I cook a lot once, and then there are leftovers for fridge and freezer 🙂 and resting without cooking for a few days.
Thank you for your comments — not too late but a little early for Christmas 2026! I love asking people in the street a question as long as I pick a good day. A non-windy Saturday or Sunday is best. I show a card with my podcast icon so they know I am legit.
I expected more people to mention Jesus, and so as usual, doing the podcast dealt me a surprise and a change of tack.
